Chicago’s punk scene has a new band to keep an eye on. Violets is made up of members from well-known groups like Naked Raygun, The Methadones, and Blood People. Their music, however, doesn’t sound like any of their past bands. Their latest single, “Eras,” is out now, and their debut EP drops May 2. Fans can also catch them live at Reggies Rock Club in Chicago on Sunday, April 27 with Riverboat Gamblers and The Evictions.
Violets includes guitarist Bill Stephens, drummer Michael Soucy, guitarist Simon Lamb, bassist and singer Fritz Doreza, and vocalist/guitarist Aly Jados. The group started after a casual meet-up at a Fontaines D.C. show. Once they brought in Jados, the full lineup was complete. Her guitar work and wide vocal range brought a new energy to the group. As Jados puts it, their sound blends heavy rock with catchy pop melodies and layered guitars, with a touch of mystery.
Their new EP, Violets, shows off the band’s creative range. The lead track “The Tower” is loud and bold, while “Eras” takes a darker turn, focusing on the idea that life happens in cycles. Another track, “Staring at the Ceiling,” slows things down and shows a softer, fuzzier side of their sound. The mix of styles gives the EP a unique edge, and the band says it reflects their different musical personalities.
Violets recorded their EP at Bombshelter Studios with Dan Precision of 88 Fingers Louie. He helped shape the songs into something more polished and sharp. Even the band was surprised at how tight the final result sounded.
Violets may be new, but the experience of its members shines through. Their music is full of sharp guitars, layered melodies, and unexpected turns. For fans of smart, modern punk that pushes boundaries, this is a band worth following. Their first songs are strong, and it’s exciting to see where they’ll go next.
