The Bitter Chills’ Young Time Rock N’ Roll blends roots rock and indie folk with sharp songwriting, humor, and a deep love for classic influences.

North Jersey’s The Bitter Chills are back with Young Time Rock N’ Roll, their third release on Mint 400 Records. Blending energetic indie folk with classic Americana and pop influences, the band crafts songs that are both tuneful and clever. Their sound nods to artists like Ryan Adams, The Decemberists, and The Lumineers, with sharp lyrics reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne and Ben Folds.

The band formed about 12 years ago, though their name isn’t tied to any deep meaning. Frontman Matt Cheplic recalls hearing the phrase “bitter chills” in a weather report and liking the contrast between the two words. That balance of humor and sincerity is evident in their music, where smart songwriting meets catchy melodies.

Cheplic’s musical journey started with saxophone in grade school, leading him through high school jazz band and eventually to guitar. His first concert was Metallica at the Meadowlands, which kicked off a love for metal that later expanded into indie rock after college. The band members bring a wide range of influences to their sound, from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Elvis Costello, Wilco, and Father John Misty.

When it comes to songwriting, Cheplic often starts with a title and builds from there. He records voice memos of chord progressions and melodies, letting ideas develop over time. That organic approach leads to music that feels thoughtful yet effortless. The Bitter Chills value spontaneity in their live performances. Cheplic enjoys reinterpreting songs, changing tempos or time signatures to keep things fresh. While some artists aim for studio-perfect live shows, he prefers a more unpredictable approach. The band hasn’t toured extensively, opting instead for carefully chosen shows with like-minded musicians. Looking ahead, The Bitter Chills are planning summer performances and working on an EP for later this year.

Their ability to blend humor, warmth, and strong musicianship makes Young Time Rock N’ Roll an engaging listen. The band’s mix of indie folk and power-pop sensibilities keeps things lively without feeling forced. For fans of melodic, lyrically sharp music, The Bitter Chills continue to be a rewarding discovery.
