Coliseum, the legendary hardcore punk band from Louisville, KY, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album with a special reissue. The album, which has been fully remixed and remastered, will be available through Equal Vision Records on November 21. Originally released in 2004, the album faced issues with its original mix that buried the drums. Now, frontman Ryan Patterson has remixed the record to highlight the entire band's energy, especially the late drummer, Matt Jaha, who passed away in 2020.
Coliseum started in 2003, with Patterson as the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band made a name for themselves in the hardcore punk scene with their fierce performances and five full-length albums. They played nearly 1,000 shows around the world before going on hiatus in 2015 after releasing Anxiety’s Kiss. Over the years, the band members explored new projects: Patterson formed the post-punk band Fotocrime, Kayhan Vaziri joined grind metal group Yautja, and Carter Wilson became the frontman for slowcore band Null.
Despite these new paths, the members of Coliseum remained close and eventually reunited to create music that revisited their roots. This effort led to the 2023 release of Infinity Shit, under the name C.L.S.M. This album was a return to the band's early hardcore punk style with raw, fast songs that tackle themes of chaos and modern life. Though it wasn't officially a Coliseum record, it carried the spirit of the original trio.
Now, with Coliseum back and the upcoming reissue of their debut, fans can look forward to hearing the album with new clarity and power. Patterson recalls the original recording process, done DIY-style with minimal equipment in a garage. This rugged approach captured the rawness the band wanted. The reissue brings those moments to life with a fresh sound.
The remastered track “Children of Our Own Creation” from the 20th Anniversary Edition is available for streaming now. Coliseum will also headline shows in the UK and Europe this November and December, reconnecting with their global fanbase.
