AloneKitty, a Toronto-based shoegaze band led by Michelle K, is making waves with their self-titled debut album, blending influences from genre-defining bands like Sonic Youth, Slowdive, HUM, and My Bloody Valentine. After being laid off from her tech job, Michelle spent a year diving deep into writing and recording, creating an intensely personal album. She then assembled a live band to bring the music to life in local venues.
In an interview, Michelle shared her thoughts on songwriting, emphasizing that honesty is key. “I think it’s vital to feel something once a song is done, to be completely vulnerable and let it all out there,” she explains. This raw vulnerability is present throughout AloneKitty, particularly in the lyrics, which explore her struggles with relationships, work, and personal transitions.
AloneKitty's sound is driven by what Michelle calls a “wall of sound that sandblasts away your thoughts.” When asked about the most influential songs and songwriters, she pointed to Sonic Youth’s “Teenage Riot” and “Tom Violence,” noting their discordant sections as a major inspiration. She also praised Slowdive’s "Sugar For The Pill," calling it near perfection.
Working with indie label Mint 400 Records has been a positive experience for Michelle and her band. “Neil at Mint400 has been great. They give us complete creative freedom and want us to succeed,” she said, appreciating the label’s passion and support.
The band’s new album reflects the intense emotions of the past few years. Michelle described it as “moody” and filled with distortion that “can wash your problems away, even if just for a few moments.” With a focus on experimentation, Michelle embraces the imperfections in her music. “The art is often in the mistakes,” she said. This philosophy has shaped AloneKitty into a shoegaze masterpiece that resonates with its listeners.
