Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead in his home today, he was 60. Asheton's personal assistant, Dara Hytinen, became worried when she couldn't contact Asheton. She then contacted the police, let them into Asheton's house with her key, and it was then that they found him dead.
Police figure that Asheton was dead several days, likely as far back as New Year's Day, but there is no evidence of foul play. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending, but as of now, it appears as if Asheton died of a heart attack.
Asheton, his brother Scott, and Iggy Pop came together in 1967 to form the Stooges. The group stood out at the time due to their reckless abandon, theatrics and pummeling style, which many feel was a clear precursor for punk and alternative rock.
