Director Todd Phillip's Hated, the seminal 1994 documentary on late shock-punk legend GG Allin, will be featured in a series of free screenings nationwide to coincide with the release of the film's special edition DVD August 7 via MVD. Kicking off in Austin with a GG-look-alike contest on July 31, the movie will barrel across nine US cities over the course of the month.
If this surplus of showings seems excessive, perhaps it's in homage to the film's larger-than-life subject, who was arrested 50 times for crimes as diverse as public defecation and indecent exposure and who is notorious for performing sexual acts with a banana in front of an unsuspecting audience of NYU studentssample song titles from the singer's catalog include "Suck My Ass It Smells" and the classic love ballad "Die When You Die." Brooklyn's Southpaw club will host the New York screening on August 7, emceed by CMJ's own New Music Monthly Editor-In-Chief Kenny Herzog. Doors open at 8 p.m.
